Supersize me

I really enjoyed constructing a set for my last project and was also interested in using typography, so I decided to make a statement about our society's, and more specifically our generation's, reliance on instant gratification. I portrayed this message by spelling out "Proud to be an American" in fast food and other common junk food. Essentially we are what we eat.

Final Project Info

Here I took pictures of people and am interested the idea of how we present our self to the world. That the viewer is very important and basically I took many pictures of people in different poses and this is some photos i have so far.

Jarrod | Final Project

Updates from my project! These are actually from my first roll of film, which consists of old monuments and gravestones relevant to my initial idea. However, since I've shifted to the idea of "what gets left behind when you get left behind," these images will probably not be used as prominently. Scott suggested using some of them as orienting images, placed amongst my trash images. I'll show you my new contact images in section.

Alright so this is just a tiny part of my project exploring family situations without the actual people involved. I've tried to create a series of pictures that show before and afters or the events in progress but without including the actual people, because in reality, this could happen in any family, whether it's a freak incident or a common event. The family is represented in a larger view of a table, dinner ready and waiting with each individual represented by the items in their places and the placement of such items. One, in my photo example, could be a person who is very concerned with orderliness and has a need to control her surroundings and those of the people around her. The food on her plate is arranged in a linear fashion. But in the next photo, the plate is falling off the table, contents spilling, showing perhaps a reaction or a rebellion against the controlling manner. Perhaps another member of the family became frustrated with the restraints and the frustration turned into physical violence. This fight spreads to the rest of the family, affecting everything in the home. Maybe there is a child involved. The photos above show the child's play area, happy at first, and I tried to imply that the child was just there or is out of the picture playing with toys outside the frame. The next photo shows that same scene, but now the happy atmosphere has been disrupted by a single shattered plate and the stuffed animals and dolls that had been cheerfully staring off into space now gaze at the source of the disruption. I purposefully tried to blur the toys out to push attention towards the plate which (hopefully) is in focus.

Sorry about the long essay.

alright so heres just another image im trying to use these women as like your typical motherly figures doing things such as cooking and cleaning. too add on to the last post i want the man to be the puppeteer in a triangular hierarchy position so that he is clearly the controller.

final project

for my final project i wanted to explore the idea of being controlled by an external force. the imagery im using is puppeteer dolls. my idea was to have the first image be a doll house and progressively zoom into the doll house untill the viewer is looking into the house. Inside im thinking of using multiple women figures all of who are attached to strings as if controlled by someone or something. im thinking that the figure i want to control these women is going to be a man as opposed to having the man inside the house with the women.

Shadows

I feel like I've never been stumped so bad when it came to a project idea. I finally endd up with shadows as my subject. I've started playing with the shadows, and what kind of shapes I can get. Scott told me the best way to go about all of this is to just take a ridiculous mount of photos and then find links between them. I also started thinking about using the shadows cast off of bottles of alcohol to allude to alcoholism, but I need to figure out exactly what items/surfaces the shadows will be cast over to create this link.

Material Lust

Ok so for those of you who don't know i changed my idea. These prints are simply my practice using an external flash. I actually got to much light so my friend is blown out some. My idea has to do with consumerism and our culture's extreme desire for material possessions. I want to take pictures on black Friday of the horrendously long lines that extend in to darkness at five different locations and then come back later that day and take after shots of the disaster zones of those stores which have been pillaged. I would pair the two images together and allow the viewer to imagine the barbaric behavior that took place in between all for material possessions.

If the clothes fit.....

While home on Thanksgiving break, I persuaded my younger siblings to re-enact the marvelous hours we used to spend together playing dress-up and creating imaginary worlds in our head. I hope that the enthusiasm and creativity we once shared still shines through in my pictures. My work displays a renewed sense of obligated but also very genuine love for one another, much as we used to have when we were younger and the world seemed much simpler. The photos are more about the interaction between siblings and the symbolism of using the childhood game of dress up to display the familial bonds that, like dress up, never get old.
All of my pictures are shot with the same background, but our outfits and props vary from picture to picture.

Many Splendored Things

I am working with photos of plants, focusing on their incredible details, the parts of them that one might not expect or otherwise appreciate or that resemble something else. I am considering ways to present them, possibly in book form with a tiny, precious detail on a page followed by a larger picture containing that detail on the next page, in an effort to get the viewer to look closer at the mysterious and delightful things that might otherwise go overlooked. Perhaps I will include drawings also. However I present them, I suppose I will have to leave the borders visible, so Sam can see that I made them even. I have lots of great diverse pics, so I may do more than the required ten prints. Very excited!

So I finally managed to figure out this picture posting thing... Sorry it took so long. The first picture is what my print could look like with the hippottoman in it. There will be shadows burnt under the hippottoman. The second is the picture with the creature blocked out and when I get a stencil to block out the background I can complete this process.

Apparently, I'm still challenged when it comes to computers so if you could imagine this rotated...

Anyways, this person used to have nightmares inspired by the movie "Them." According to him, he was so scared by this movie when he was a child that when a drunk driver crashed into a tree in his front yard in the middle of the night, he imagined the sound was the giant ants coming to get him. He admits the he then ran out of his bedroom screaming, "The ants are coming, the ants are coming!"

the big bang!

ok so i was inspired by the sculptures of EV day and really wanted to work with this idea of a changing and expanding sculpture. in these pictures i want the viewer to see a globe and in the globe a bundle of dynamite. Yes i am "blowing up the world!" creepy but fun! kind of a pinky and the brain activity if you know what i mean. but seriously these photos are just the first in a series these are just for the viewer to see the world and dynamite and get this sense of urgency. the next photos are of the dynamite being ignited and the explosion! sugestions please!!! im worried you cant see the dynamite.

Princess Lolly

So this is Princess Lolly from candy land. She lives in the Lollipop Forest which i drew in chalk on the back ground to kinda make this seem like she came out of a child's drawing of the game. She is really young looking in comparison to all the other characters, so i wanted my model to be doing the child like poses and playing with the lollipops.

My idea for the project was to take the after image of nursery rhymes. So here i have a boy catching the spider that scared Miss Muffet, Little Jack Horner's half eaten pie, Humpty Dumpty being cleaned up and the plate running off with the spoon in Hey Diddle Diddle. For the plate and the spoon do u think that it is okay that part of my house is showing on the left side, or should i use another location?

I was attempting to convey nightmares/fears (blood, monsters under the bed, giant spiders) with a miniature set, made from mostly clay and foam board, except the blood looks more like slime and the persons head is too big.

HOMONYMS!!!!!!

I am really interested in language and word play, so my photos are made up of homonyms. These are words that are spelled differently but sound the same, like "ball" and "bawl". In the first picture, Charlotte has a plate on her head, and her hair is plaited (braided). She has rings on her fingers as she is wringing out the towel. And she is hearing something from the X that marks 'here'.
Emil is peeing with a abowl of peas next to him, and his shirt is full of holes while a Holy crucifix is on top of the toilet paper roll on the sink.

Street Fighter-esque?

Basically I wanted to create really actiony sword fighting scenes, reminiscent of street fighter, that's why the bg is the way it is. (Cause street fighter and mortal combat are placed in cityscapes or random contemporary areas) Let me know what you guys think of that. Also, one of the photos kind of has what I was originally going for. Basically, one is a still, another is the jump, and the other one is a movement shot/action shot. I wanted to capture the act of fighting. This is only one of the shots, the others weren't that good and the other ones turned out blank for some reason so I'm going to have to reshoot. Also, it only shows one area where the fight is at, for the other ones I want to turn it/show I want to show multiple areas of the plane with action shots. I also had some hand-to-hand combat, but those where one the same blank reel so I'm going to reshoot that too, but that's the plan. So yea... :)

Jarrod Tredway | Nymph

After the devastating find that 27 of my shots were simply not there, I wiped my tears and moved on to what I did have. These shots are the two from this shoot that I would like to use in critique.

I am still working on the technical aspects to get them to match a little better - one has a lot of dark information and the other a lot of light. However, individually I would say they are well printed. The left leg may be a little dark in the image where she is standing, though.

The idea behind these was to bring a sleek glamour to an organic setting, thereby creating a world all its own. I wanted to play off of the Shakespearean notion of nymphs and woodland creatures, thus the white dress and general excess.

Technically or conceptually, I'd love to hear feedback!
